Abstract

This interview with Marcos Cherinda, a founder member of AMIEMAC (Mozambican Association for Research into the Teaching of Mathematics and Natural Sciences), provides insights into mathematics education and research in Mozambique. Cherinda discusses the country's journey since its independence in 1975, highlighting how mathematics education played a crucial role in the nation's development and liberation movement. He describes the challenges in organizing a cohesive mathematics research community, with particular emphasis on ethnomathematics research led by Paulus Gerdes. Cherinda emphasizes the importance of international collaboration and the urgent need to improve mathematics education in Mozambique to achieve sustainable development goals, calling for renewed enthusiasm and increased resource allocation to transform mathematics education for the country's economic growth and wellbeing.
